V4 — Building geometry and stair coordination

Scope and design decisions

This is a new preserved iteration of the user's two uploaded floor-plan sketches. Main body 13.20 × 8.60 m, a 17.4% area increase. Outer walls assumed 300 mm, principal partitions 150 mm. Room arrangement retained; no guest suite, extra bedroom or furniture added.

The former photographic sweeping stair is superseded for this iteration by the user's L-shaped route: straight regular steps, a square level turn landing and expressive timber handrails/stringers that can retain the house's bowed character. No winder steps.

There are fewer regular treads than in the previous continuous sweeping-stair study because the level intermediate landing replaces one going. The step-count labels show risers, including the last riser onto each landing.

Shared coordinates

Origin is the main body's northwest outside corner; x east, y south, z upward. Turn landing clear rectangle: x 7.92–8.92 m, y 3.48–4.48 m. Upper arrival at x 5.60 m; basement arrival at ground at x 5.89 m. Upper stair start y 6.80 m; basement start y 6.51 m. These differences come directly from the different flight counts.

The first-floor void includes the clear flights and a nominal 80–100 mm side allowance for timber structure and guarding. It is 6.73 m² and ends at y 6.90 m, leaving a 1.40 m front circulation route. Handrails must fit outside the 1000 mm clear walking dimension. Closed risers and vertical balusters are the intended construction character.

Headroom and structure

The main-floor opening follows the entire L-shaped run, so the ground ceiling does not cross above the climbing route. The stacked basement flight has a sampled clearance of at least 2.554 m to the proposed upper stair underside when a 220 mm structural envelope is assumed. Basement room clear height remains 2350 mm; ground 2750 mm; first 2550 mm.

These are preliminary geometric checks, not a structural sign-off. The stair-floor trimming beams must remain outside the reserved clear path. The main upper partition above the open living room needs a support/beam strategy. Roof slopes are illustrative: the bowed roof and central gable must be modeled to confirm upper landing and room headroom. No unsupported cantilever is assumed.

Chimney, services and area

The chimney occupies a reserved 600 × 600 mm shaft at x 3.00–3.60 m, y 4.25–4.85 m, clear of the gallery. The family bathroom's drain/service route is along its east edge and descends to the basement utility area. Both living-room and atelier fireplace mouths align with this shaft; flue specification and appliance clearances need detailed development.

Main-floor gross figures exclude veranda and bay projections. Room figures are clear plan areas with the shaft deducted where it overlaps, not certified usable living areas. The first-floor bedroom figures do not deduct low roof slopes. The partial basement occupies the front band, y 3.10–8.60 m, leaving the rear unexcavated.

Design benchmark

Approved Document K is used for proportion, level landing, handrail and headroom design guidance; the project location has not been assigned a building-code jurisdiction.
