# Wooden staircase baseline

This is a construction-led art-direction baseline, not a permit or fabrication drawing. Final dimensions, structure, fire strategy and local compliance require an architect / structural engineer and qualified staircase builder.

## Working dimensions for comparison

| Item | Working target |
|---|---:|
| Central stair envelope | approximately 3.0 × 3.3 m |
| Clear usable flight width | 1,000 mm target |
| Ground to first floor | approximately 2,850 mm / 17 risers |
| Basement to ground floor | approximately 2,600 mm / 15 risers |
| Typical rise | approximately 168–173 mm |
| Typical going | 290 mm |
| Step rule | 2 × rise + going ≈ 625–636 mm |
| Pitch | approximately 30° |
| Landing depth | at least equal to clear flight width |
| Clear headroom target | 2,100 mm |
| Handrail height target | approximately 900 mm |
| Guard height target | approximately 1,000 mm |
| Baluster clear gap target | no more than 110 mm |

## Shared build principles

- Uniform rise and going throughout each flight.
- Closed timber risers for a family house.
- Straight treads and full landings; no decorative winders in this option set.
- Continuous, graspable handrails with returned ends.
- Vertical infill rather than climbable horizontal rails.
- Complete guarding at every floor opening and landing.
- Matte, slip-resistant timber finish and clearly readable first / last step.
- Structure and openings stack from basement to first floor.

## Recommendation

Option 01 is the best starting point for measured architectural development. Option 02 carries more of the house's bowed-timber personality while retaining straight, uniform treads and full landings.
